Things to Ask Yourself Before Starting College/University
‘It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped’
If you’re starting college this year and very much excited about it, there are things you need to ask yourself before starting this incredible journey. Asking yourself these questions will help you to prepare what is coming, whether you’d like it or not. Going to college is an experience of a lifetime, you’ll make so many great memories! But it’s also a long journey. Which is why asking these questions is important to make sure that your college journey will not be a waste!
#1 Do I really want to go to college?
This might be a silly question, but it’s very important to ask yourself whether you really want to go to college. It’s important to be sure that you truly want to go to college. Think about the reason why you’re going to college // is it because of your family /or/ is it because of pressure from society /or/ is it because you truly one to go to college. By thinking about it you can be more certain that this is the right path for you, and if you think it’s not, you can start thinking about what should I do to make this right? Maybe you can attend student society that will excite you, or maybe you can live by yourself for the first time. Try to map out why you want to go to college and make sure you find at least one good reason to go to college.
#2 Is my course right for me?
You’ll be studying your course for 3-4 years so make sure that you’re choosing the right course. You don’t need to have everything figure it out yet, and you don’t need to be 100% sure about the course. But at least be 60% sure that this is the course you want to study. You might change your mind further down the line and that’s okay! But make sure you don’t have doubt in the beginning, when you’re just about to start.
#3 Will I enjoy living in the city where my college is?
Another important question to ask is whether you’ll enjoy living in a city where you’ll be living for the next 3-4 years. One of the most exciting parts about university is to be living in the city where the campus is located as it will be where 50% of your university experience came from. So, make sure that you’ll enjoy the city, or at the very least, think about the nearest city you can visit from your campus.
#4 What excited me the most about starting college?
What excited you the most about starting college? Is it studying in your dream campus, or studying the course you’re very passionate about, or is it living independently for the first time, or is it the location of the campus that excite you the most? Try to think about one main reason why you want to start this journey and stick to it. This will help you to be more certain of this journey and inspire as well as motivate you to take this journey. By focusing on this, it will also give you clarity that you’re on the right track.
#5 Have I chosen the right university for me?
Last but not least is to ask whether you have chosen the right university for you. If this is your dream campus then that’s great, you’re good to go! But if it’s not your first option then think why you choose this university. Maybe it’s good because it’s located in your favorite city, or maybe it’s good because it has your dream course, or maybe it’s good because the price is affordable, or maybe it’s good because you want to join their sorority. There are many reasons why a university can be right for you. Find one that resonates with you the most and holds into it. If you can’t find any reason why you choose this university, then have a think about whether you’ve made the right decision. Better think about it now before wasting any time or money. But eventually, it’s never too late to start over.
